From Zimbabwe to England: A Journey of Exploration

My journey from Zimbabwe to England led me to a remarkable path in the world of pharmacy. As I pursued my studies, I couldn’t help but be drawn to the world of herbs and medicines. The connection between traditional African herbs and the development of elixirs fascinated me.

The Love for Gin: A Revelation

After graduating from university, I could afford to explore other alcoholic drinks, rather than just those that could get me drunk for the cheapest price. I developed a taste for gin. But I couldn’t help but notice that many gins on the market, even the premium ones, had a harshness and an aftertaste that left something to be desired. This realization ignited a desire within me to craft something unique – a gin that was not just easy to drink but a delight to the senses.

Botanical Inspiration: Baobab and Rooibos

As a child, I vividly remember enjoying baobab fruits. Little did I know then that the world would come to recognize baobab as a superfood with incredible benefits for the body. Additionally, my all- time favorite warm beverage has always been Rooibos tea. Its naturally sweet and caffeine-free nature made it a constant companion in my life. One day, like a stroke of genius, I decided to blend these two incredible ingredients with juniper, cinnamon, coriander, nutmeg, and angelica. The magic happened at a distillery near my home in Colchester, Essex. With my science background and a sprinkle of luck, I managed to create the finest gin after only two visits to the distillery. That’s how Matopos Gin was born.

Pharmacist's Precision: Quality Assurance

Drawing from my pharmacy background, I subjected Matopos Gin to rigorous blind tastings, much like the meticulous tests pharmaceutical companies conduct to ensure the safety and efficacy of new medicines. The results were astonishing, with exceptional taste and quality shining through. We couldn’t keep this hidden treasure to ourselves, and we knew it was time to share it with the world. After all, great things are better when shared.

Why Matopos Gin?

The name Matopos Gin holds two significant meanings. Firstly, it pays homage to the source of our baobab, Matopos in Zimbabwe, while also representing our commitment to sustainable practices. Secondly, “Matopos” is derived from the word “Matombo,” which translates to “rocks” in English. Just like the rocks, our gin is smooth and perfect to enjoy “on the rocks.”

Our Future: Creating Memories with Matopos

Our journey has only just begun. Our aim is to keep the creativity flowing, bringing you more gins to enjoy and create memories with. We’re excited to continue this adventure, and we invite you to join us every step of the way.
